Wi-Fi, Diagnostics and GPS TRACKER
Sprint Drive is telematic device that communicates with your car`s computer via your vehicles OBD-II port. The device then relays diagnostic and maintenance information to your cell phone via Bluetooth. Sprint has also bundled Wi-Fi and GPS tracker into the device.
Is Sprint Drive for you ?
The first thing you should consider before purchasing Sprint Drive is if any of its three functions fits your needs. For instance, if you own a late-model vehicle you probably have an on-board diagnostics display on your dashboard. So you do not need Sprint Drive diagnostic function . However, you still might like some of the other functions that the device offers such as the GPS tracker.
Note: Sprint Drive is not compatible with electric or hybrid cars.
If you’re the parent of a young driver, then the Sprint Drive tracker function is indispensable. Not only will the device track the location of the vehicle, but it will also provide you with feedback on the driving habits of the driver. You can even set curfews for the vehicle. If the curfew is broken, the Sprint Drive device will notify you immediately.
If you own an older vehicle that does not have a dashboard diagnostic display and was manufactured after 1998, devices like Sprint Drive are a must.
We installed Sprint Drive on a 2005 vehicle six months ago, and have been quite satisfied with the way the device constantly monitored the battery, coolant, and air intake. And when the vehicle did have an issue. The OBD-II code(DTC) was on the mark. However, we did find the report to be rather basic. Other more expensive devices on the market offer a much more detailed interpretation of the DTC, but those features are just bells and whistles. Once you have the DTCs, you can simply google it and you will be provided with all the info you need including estimated repair cost. So in our opinion, while the Sprint Drive diagnostics are pretty basic, they are still effective. Couple that with AAA 24/7 emergency roadside assistance. Sprint Drive is a good buy for its price range.
It is important to note that DTCs are guides and not a final diagnoses. So before you accuse your mechanic of ripping you off, it might be best to get a second opinion.
Wi-Fi Hot Spot
Sprint Drive offers a 4G LTE, 2GB plan for $10 per month or an unlimited plan for $25 per month. If you want to use the wi-fi just for the vehicle then the 2GB plan makes sense, but if you want to use the wi-fi anywhere anytime both in and of the vehicle (you must have a special USB or AC adapter to use the device out of the vehicle, see below) then the unlimited plan is a great deal at $25 per month.
Note: if you want to use the Sprint Drive device out of your vehicle, you must purchase a special aftermarket USB or AC adapter.
While we were not blown away by any single feature on the Sprint Drive device. We feel that the value lies in its versatility. We especially like the fact that the wi-fi capabilities can be enhanced through a special adapter.
